Giving Very Brief Advice on Stopping Smoking

The National Referral System is a coordinated nation-wide approach to support patients to stop smoking, enabling electronic referrals directly from hospitals to local Stop Smoking Services.

This quick introduction to the system was created by the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training as bespoke training for King’s Health Partners staff, including:

  • recent statistics illustrating why smoking is such an urgent issue to address for people in local boroughs, such Southwark and Lambeth
  • information on how smoking exacerbates conditions in each speciality
  • guidance on how to use your own hospital’s electronic records system to make a referral.

Spending ten minutes completing this e-learning will help you confidently broach the issue of smoking with any patient you come into contact with, and help raise awareness of free local services that could offer them support and treatments to stop smoking. You will also receive a certificate on completion as evidence of your professional development.

The referral system is now active in King’s College Hospital, Guys and St. Thomas, and the Princess Royal and Orpington Hospital. All King’s Health Partners staff and students are welcome to view the introduction to better understand how the new system can benefit their patients.
