National Early Warning Score (NEWS)

The NEWS system is used at both Guy's and St. Thomas' and King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trusts to standardise patients' physiological observations and assess the severity of acute illness. It was developed by the Royal College of Physicians and has been widely adopted by NHS Trusts across the UK.

This interactive presentation explains how to use the NEWS system:

  • How to measure and score the seven vital physiological signs
  • How to calculate the patient’s NEWS score
  • What clinical response and level of monitoring is required for different scores
  • How to communicate the critical information effectively in urgent cases
