About this course
Evidence suggests that only one-third of patients with diabetes achieve their glycaemic targets. As medicine-taking is key to successful management of long-term conditions such as diabetes, underuse or non-adherence of medicines represents a lost opportunity for health gain and is a waste of resources
This module explores the challenges of nonadherence in diabetes, and demonstrates approaches that community pharmacists and other healthcare professionals can use to effectively engage patients in patient-centred consultations about self-management of medicines.
The module includes the following three units, which will take up to two hours in total to complete:
- Understanding and addressing non-adherence in diabetes provides two selfpaced presentations explaining why many patients do not take their prescribed medicines and practical techniques and strategies to effectively engage patients in consultations about self-management of medicines
- Consultation skills in practice is an interactive video resource, which uses simulated patient consultations and reflective exercises to offer practice identifying effective behaviours and strategies for effective consultations about self-management of medicines
- Reflective activities provide structured activities to consolidate understanding
