AMBER Care Bundle

The AMBER care bundle is a simple approach used when it is unclear whether a patient’s condition will improve or if they are likely to deteriorate further, despite treatment.  It helps staff, patients and families to plan ahead, talking openly about people's wishes and putting plans in place should things get worse, while still continuing with treatment in the hope of a recovery.

This interactive resource was designed by Dr Irene Carey, the lead consultant for palliative care at Guys and St Thomas’.  The resource takes approximately 20 minutes to work through, and will help you:

  • recognise when to use the AMBER care bundle
  • understand its four stages and team members’ roles at each stage
  • practice how to apply the bundle to realistic case examples.
