About the course:
This course aims to prepare and offer practitioners working in renal setting the foundation of general nephrology and haemodialysis health care. They will have the opportunity to develop and critically evaluate specialist nephrology and haemodialysis skills and knowledge in order to deliver high quality compassionate care.
Through this course, you will be able to better undertand the signifficance of:
- Renal anatomy & Physiology, including pathophysiology of kidney diseases
- Patient assessment & ongoing care including psychosocial aspects of patient care
- The renal patient’s journey: General nephrology (Advance kidney care, Peritoneal dialysis, Transplant and supportive care)
- Principles of Dialysis (Haemodialysis, Haemofiltration, Haemodialfitration)
- Vascular access management
- Long-term management: Renal nutrition, anaemia, bone disease and adequacy
This course incorporates a blended learning approach. The educational approach is student centered and you will experience a wide variety of teaching and learning strategies including:
- Online lectures and discussions (online lectures that may be live or pre-recorded or narrated PowerPoint presentations)
- E-learning activities
- Directed reading and study
- Case studies and discussion
- Reflective practice

Roseline Agyekum
FHEA MSc PG Cert HCP BSc CCN RN | Lecturer Practitioner | King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Roseline's educational research area is long term conditions with special interest in chronic kidney disease awareness especially among people of African and Afro-Caribbean Ancestry. Her publications have focused on vascular access longevity. Vascular access is the Achilles heel of haemodialysis as a renal replacement therapy.
Her role at King's College Hospital fosters the embedding of research into clinical care through Practice Development. She is involved in a number of Quality Improvement projects to deliver harm-free evidence based care to patients. She is intentional about developing an empowered, motivated, and sustainable renal workforce.

Letittia Agbegah
Practice Development Nurse | King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Letittia trained at Buckinghamshire University completing her Higher Education Diploma of Nursing in 2000. She then started working for Kings College hospital in 2001 in Respiratory medicine and later moved to Renal medicine. She completed her post graduate education at KCL, obtaining a degree in clinical nursing, renal course, mentorship course, high dependency nursing course, effective teaching, and NMC teaching course. She has been a renal practice development nurse since 2014 and is currently seconded to the Acute kidney injury team as one of the lead nurses.

Sarala Ghimire

Sarala joined King's Main Dialysis Unit in 2006. She became part of the Renal Education team in 2018 and has been part of various quality improvements projects to improve patient outcomes in renal dialysis settings.

Nithyakala Devaraj

Nithya became a part of National kidney foundation in Singapore in 1999 as a renal nurse. In 2003 she joined the Renal dialysis unit at the Salford Royal Hospital in Manchester for 9 years. She was the access link nurse and supported students whilst on their placement in renal. In 2012 she started working at King's satellite unit as a junior sister in Sydenham . She took over the role of PDN in the renal education team since 2014, and has been involved in various quality improvements projects to improve patient outcomes in renal dialysis settings.
